Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Doctor Felix Rey, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in January 1889, this portrait shows Félix Rey, the young doctor who cared for Van Gogh after his breakdown. Van Gogh gave it to Rey in thanks; he set the doctor’s dark-bearded face and blue coat against a boldly patterned green-and-red ground of curling arabesques, a warm and grateful tribute in strong, decorative colour.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the bold pattern and steady face keep the character of the original.
Where a bold portrait belongs
Colourful and characterful, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works well against plain, warm walls.
