Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Dr Gachet, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Auvers-sur-Oise in June 1890, this is one of Van Gogh’s most famous portraits: Dr Paul Gachet, the physician who cared for him in his final weeks, leaning his head on his hand with what Van Gogh called ‘the heartbroken expression of our time’. A sprig of foxglove, the plant used to treat the heart, lies on the blue-and-red table. Painted in deep blues, it is a portrait of modern melancholy, and became one of the most valuable paintings ever sold.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the pensive face and deep blues keep the feeling of the original.
