Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Gijsbertus de Groot, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this portrait shows a young man of the De Groot family, the peasant household whose cottage Van Gogh visited constantly and who sat for The Potato Eaters. His steady face and cap emerge from a dark ground, modelled in the deep earth tones of his Dutch period with a close, sympathetic attention, one of the honest country faces at the heart of his great Nuenen project.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the steady face and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where a portrait belongs
Grave and characterful, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
