Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Joseph Roulin, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1889, this is one of the later portraits Van Gogh made of his good friend the postman Joseph Roulin. The bearded, blue-uniformed figure is set against a boldly decorative ground of scrolling green and pink flowers, his kind face full of character. Van Gogh painted the whole Roulin family many times; these portraits are among the warmest and most human of his career.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the blue uniform and flowered ground keep the warmth of the original.
Where a great portrait belongs
Warm and richly patterned, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works well against plain walls that let its colour sing.
