Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Pere Tanguy, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1887, this warm portrait shows Julien ‘Père’ Tanguy, the paint seller who supported struggling artists and let Van Gogh trade canvases for materials. Van Gogh set the round, benign old man squarely before a bright wall of the Japanese woodblock prints they both loved, Fuji, blossoms, geishas, making the portrait a tribute to a friend and to Japanese art at once. It is one of his most affectionate and colourful portraits.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the kindly face and colourful print wall keep the warmth of the original.
Where this famous portrait belongs
Warm and richly patterned, it suits a study, a living room, an art room or a hallway, and works well against plain walls that let its colour sing.
