Description
Van Gogh’s Prisoners Exercising, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1890, Prisoners Exercising reworks an engraving by Gustave Doré of prisoners trudging in an endless circle inside towering prison walls. Van Gogh reimagined it entirely in his own deep blues and greens, and many see the lone pale-faced figure at the centre as a quiet self-portrait, a powerful, moving image of confinement from his own time in the asylum.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the deep colour and circling figures keep the power of the original.
Where a powerful figure scene belongs
Sombre and striking, it suits a study, a hallway or a contemplative modern interior, and works best against plain or darker walls.
