Description
Van Gogh’s Quay with Men Unloading Sand Barges, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this shows dockers carrying loads up gangplanks from sand barges moored at the quay on the Rhône, the town and bright water behind them. Van Gogh admired the rhythm of hard physical work, and painted the busy quay in strong yellows, blues and greens with firm, energetic strokes, a vivid picture of labour and light by the great river.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the working dockers and strong colour keep the vitality of the original.
Where a riverside scene belongs
Its strong, sunny colour suits a living room, a study or a hallway, and pairs well with warm woods and calm interiors.
