Description
Van Gogh’s Reclining Nude, Seen from the Back, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1887, this is one of the few figure studies Van Gogh made of the nude, showing a woman reclining and seen from behind, her form modelled in warm flesh tones against a muted ground. Rare in his work, it was painted as he absorbed the lighter palette and freer brushwork of his Paris years; the softly worked back and quiet colour make it an intimate, gently observed study of the human figure.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the reclining figure and warm tones keep the character of the original.
Where a figure study belongs
Its warm, muted tones suit a bedroom, a study or a considered interior, and work well against neutral walls.
