Van Gogh’s Road with Cypress and Star, hand-painted in oil
Painted in 1890, Road with Cypress and Star is one of Van Gogh’s last and most dreamlike works: a towering dark cypress rises between an evening star and a crescent moon, while two travellers walk a country road below. The whole sky swirls with the same energy as The Starry Night, and Van Gogh described the cypress as the dark note that holds the picture together. The original is at the Kröller-Müller Museum.
