Description
Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait (1887), hand-painted in oil
One of the many self-portraits Van Gogh painted during his Paris years, this 1887 work builds his face from short, separate strokes of blue, green and orange around a steady, searching gaze. Unable to afford models, he used his own reflection as a laboratory for the bright, broken colour he was learning in Paris. The original is in the Kröller-Müller Museum.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the woven complementary colour and intense expression keep the power of the original.
Where a bold portrait belongs
A Van Gogh self-portrait brings real presence to a study, a living room or a hallway, and works best against plain, warm walls.
