Description
Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Felt Hat, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1886, this is one of the earlier of Van Gogh’s many self-portraits. His bearded face, shaded by a dark felt hat, emerges from a muted ground in the browns and greys he brought from Holland, just as the Paris art world was about to transform his colour. It is a quiet, serious image of the artist at the threshold of his great change.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the felt hat and muted colour keep the character of the original.
Where a self-portrait belongs
Quiet and characterful, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works well against plain, warm walls.
