Painted in Paris in 1887, this bright self-portrait shows Van Gogh in a light straw summer hat, his face and the background built from countless small strokes of blue, orange and green. One of many he made in the city, it captures him mastering the vibrating, dotted colour of Neo-Impressionism, using his own reflection as a study in light, fresh, direct and modern.
