Description
Van Gogh’s Shelter on Montmartre, hand-painted in oil
Painted in 1886, Shelter on Montmartre shows a rough, ramshackle wooden shelter among the allotment gardens and fences of the then half-rural hill of Montmartre, under a wide sky. From Van Gogh’s early Paris year, it is painted in muted greens, greys and ochres as his palette began to lift, a fresh, on-the-spot glimpse of a humble corner of the city.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the rough shelter and fresh light keep the mood of the original.
Where a fresh cityscape belongs
Its muted, open palette suits a living room, a study or a hallway, and pairs well with neutral walls, wood and soft light.
