Description
Van Gogh’s Still Life with Bible, hand-painted in oil
Painted in 1885 just after the death of his father, a pastor, Still Life with Bible is one of Van Gogh’s most personal works. A large open family Bible dominates the table, and beside it lies a small, worn copy of Zola’s modern novel La Joie de vivre, the old faith and the new, set quietly side by side. It is a portrait of a whole outlook, painted in deep, sombre colour.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the dark ground, pale pages and quiet meaning keep the weight of the original.
Where a powerful still life belongs
Grave and thoughtful, it suits a study, a library or a living room, and pairs well with warm woods and considered interiors.
