Description
Van Gogh’s Still Life with Birds’ Nests, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this unusual still life sets three woven birds’ nests against a deep, dark ground. Van Gogh collected real nests that autumn and painted them several times, fascinated by their intricate natural craft; he saw them as little emblems of home and instinct. Here the tangled twigs and moss are modelled in warm browns with a close, tender attention.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the woven nests and warm tones keep the character of the original.
Where a nature still life belongs
Quiet and unusual, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pairs well with wood, greenery and warm light.
