Van Gogh’s Summer Evening in Arles, hand-painted in oil

Painted in Arles in 1888, Summer Evening looks across a ripe wheat field toward the town, with a great low sun burning in the evening sky. Van Gogh loved the charged light of dusk in Provence, and worked it here in warm golds and violets with quick, rhythmic strokes, a wide, glowing landscape at the close of a summer day.
