Description
Van Gogh’s The Man is at Sea, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this is Van Gogh’s coloured version of a work by Virginie Demont-Breton. A fisherman’s wife sits by the hearth cradling her sleeping child, waiting for her husband who is out on the dangerous sea. Van Gogh reimagined the tender scene in his own warm reds, oranges and browns of firelight, an image of love, anxiety and quiet devotion in a humble home.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the mother, child and firelight keep the tenderness of the original.
Where a tender figure scene belongs
Its warm, glowing tones suit a bedroom, a living room or a study, and work beautifully against neutral or warm walls.
