Description
Van Gogh’s The Old Church Tower at Nuenen, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1884, this shows the old, crumbling tower of the village church rising above the surrounding fields under a wide sky, with birds wheeling overhead. Van Gogh was deeply attached to this ruined tower, which he called ‘the peasants’ churchyard’ and saw as a symbol of the old faith and the passing of generations; here the dark stone and bare land are worked in the sober earth tones of his Dutch period with a grave, elegiac feeling.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the old tower and earthy tones keep the mood of the original.
Where a country scene belongs
Its sober, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pair well with wood and warm light.
