Description
Van Gogh’s The Old Tower at Nuenen, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1884, this shows the old ruined tower of the village church rising alone from the winter fields under a wide, low sky, with birds circling above. Van Gogh was deeply attached to this crumbling tower, which he saw as a symbol of the old peasant faith passing away; he painted it several times, and here the dark stone and bare land are worked in the sober earth tones of his Dutch period with a grave, elegiac feeling.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the old tower and earthy tones keep the mood of the original.
Where a country scene belongs
Its sober, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pair well with wood and warm light.
