Description
Van Gogh’s The Potato Eaters, hand-painted in oil
The Potato Eaters (1885) is the great achievement of Van Gogh’s Dutch period, five peasants gathered around a single lamp to share a plate of potatoes, their weathered hands and faces modelled in deep, earthy browns. He wanted the picture to show that these people ‘have tilled the earth with the very hands they put in the dish’, and worked for months to give their hard, honest lives their full dignity. It is dark, sincere and unforgettable.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the lamplit faces and deep earthy colour keep the power of the original.
