Painted in 1887 along the Seine near Asnières outside Paris, this bright scene shows the river and the Pont de Clichy under a fresh sky, the water shimmering in small, separate touches of pale colour. It comes from the spring Van Gogh painted alongside his Impressionist and Pointillist friends, and glows with light and air, sunny, delicate and modern.
