Description
Van Gogh’s The Sower, after Millet, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this is one of Van Gogh’s coloured ‘translations’ of the famous sower by Jean-François Millet, the artist he revered above all. A lone sower strides down a hillside casting seed with a great sweeping gesture, set against a glowing sky. Van Gogh reimagined Millet’s design entirely in his own warm, restless colour, turning the humble figure into an image of faith and renewal.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the striding sower and warm colour keep the power of the original.
Where a figure landscape belongs
Strong and symbolic, it suits a living room, a study or a hallway, and pairs well with warm woods and considered interiors.
