Description
Van Gogh’s The Sower, after Millet, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this is Van Gogh’s coloured ‘translation’ of a famous composition by Jean-François Millet, the artist he revered above all others. A lone sower strides down a hillside casting seed with a great sweeping gesture, silhouetted against the sky. Van Gogh reimagined Millet’s design entirely in his own restless colour and brushwork, turning the humble figure into an image of faith and renewal.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the striding sower and rhythmic strokes keep the power of the original.
Where a figure landscape belongs
Strong and symbolic, it suits a living room, a study or a hallway, and pairs well with warm woods and considered interiors.
