Description
Van Gogh’s The Sower, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this is another of Van Gogh’s several versions of the sower, a subject he treasured above almost all others. A lone sower strides across a field casting seed, often beneath a great disc of sun that fills the sky. Inspired by Millet but wholly his own, and set in ringing complementary colour, the humble figure stands for renewal, faith and the endless cycle of the land.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the striding sower and strong colour keep the power of the original.
Where a symbolic landscape belongs
Strong and symbolic, it suits a living room, a study or a hallway, and pairs well with warm woods and considered interiors.
