Description
Van Gogh’s The Woodcutter, after Millet, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, The Woodcutter is one of the series of ‘translations’ Van Gogh made after prints by Jean-François Millet, the painter of peasant life he revered. He kept Millet’s figure of a woodcutter at his labour but reworked it entirely in his own warm colour and rolling brushwork, treating the copy as a heartfelt version in a new key during his year at the asylum.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the labouring figure and warm colour keep the feeling of the original.
Where a peasant scene belongs
Grounded and warm, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and pairs beautifully with wood and warm light.
