Description
Van Gogh’s Two Hands, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this intense little study shows a pair of rough, working hands, close up against a dark ground. Van Gogh made several such studies of hands as he prepared The Potato Eaters, believing that the coarse, capable hands of the peasants told the whole story of their laboring lives. Modelled in deep earth tones, this quiet fragment has a moving, sculptural honesty.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the working hands and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where a study belongs
Quiet and moving, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
