Description
Van Gogh’s Two Peasant Women Digging Potatoes, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, the year of The Potato Eaters, this shows two peasant women bent low side by side, digging potatoes from a broad, dark field under a heavy sky. Van Gogh admired the endurance of the country workers and painted them without sentiment, in the deep browns and earthy greens of his Dutch period, the two figures fused with the soil they labour over, rooted, honest and monumental.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the bent figures and earthy field keep the weight of the original.
Where a working scene belongs
Its dark, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pair well with wood and warm light.
