Description
Van Gogh’s View of Amsterdam, hand-painted in oil
Painted quickly in 1885 on a visit to Amsterdam to see the great museums, this small cityscape looks out over the wide square before the Central Station, with carriages, figures and the towers of the city under a soft grey sky. Van Gogh sketched it directly in loose, rapid strokes and cool tones, a fresh, on-the-spot impression of the busy Dutch capital.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the broad square and grey light keep the mood of the original.
Where a city view belongs
Its cool, atmospheric tones suit a study, a living room or a hallway, and pair well with neutral walls, wood and soft light.
