Description
Van Gogh’s Woman at a Table, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this study shows a peasant woman seated quietly at a table, her figure caught in the warm gloom of a cottage interior. It belongs to the many studies of country people Van Gogh made in the year of The Potato Eaters, modelled in the deep browns and greys of his Dutch period, honest and unposed, a plain, sympathetic picture of the humble domestic life he lived among.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the seated figure and warm shadow keep the character of the original.
Where a figure study belongs
Its quiet, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and work well against neutral or darker walls.
