Description
Van Gogh’s Evening, The End of the Day, after Millet, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this is Van Gogh’s coloured ‘translation’ of a design by Jean-François Millet, the artist he revered above all others. A weary peasant stretches at the end of a long day’s work in the field, silhouetted against a glowing evening sky. Van Gogh reimagined Millet’s composition entirely in his own warm violets, blues and gold, an image of rest, labour and the close of day.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the weary peasant and evening colour keep the mood of the original.
Where a figure landscape belongs
Its warm, glowing tones suit a living room, a study or a hallway, and pair well with wood and warm light.
