Description
Van Gogh’s La Berceuse (Lullaby), hand-painted in oil
One of the five versions of La Berceuse Van Gogh painted in 1888-89, this shows Augustine Roulin, the Arles postman’s wife, holding the cord of an unseen cradle against a wall alive with green and red flowers. He gave the picture the tender subtitle of a lullaby and meant it to console; he imagined it hung like an icon between two of his sunflower canvases, a calm, glowing image of motherhood.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the flowered ground and calm figure keep the warmth of the original.
Where a warm portrait belongs
Rich and homely, it suits a living room, a bedroom or a nursery, and pairs beautifully with greenery, warm woods and soft light.
