Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Augustine Roulin, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this portrait shows Augustine Roulin, wife of Van Gogh’s friend the postman Joseph Roulin, seated in a green dress against a coloured ground. Van Gogh painted the whole Roulin family with real warmth, and Augustine several times, most famously as La Berceuse; here her calm, kindly face and the strong, harmonious colour make a tender, dignified portrait of a working woman.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the calm sitter and strong colour keep the warmth of the original.
Where a portrait belongs
Warm and characterful, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
