Description
Van Gogh’s Thatched Sandstone Cottages in Chaponval, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890, in the last weeks of his life, this shows a cluster of old sandstone cottages with steep thatched roofs on the hillside of the hamlet of Chaponval, with a figure on the road and green trees around. Van Gogh loved these ancient roofs; here the warm stone, deep thatch and fresh greenery are worked in his vigorous, rhythmic strokes, a bright, characterful village scene.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the old cottages and vigorous strokes keep the vitality of the original.
Where a village scene belongs
Its warm, fresh tones suit a living room, a kitchen or a bright hallway, and pair beautifully with wood, greenery and natural light.
