Description
Van Gogh’s The Drinkers, after Daumier, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1890, The Drinkers is Van Gogh’s painted ‘translation’ of a design by Honoré Daumier. Four men, a child, two adults and an old man, drink in a cold, smoky street, a wry image of the ages of life. Van Gogh reimagined the black-and-white print entirely in his own restless colour and brushwork, cold blues and earthy browns brought to life.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the four figures and lively strokes keep the mood of the original.
Where a bold figure scene belongs
Characterful and strong, it suits a study, a dining room, a bar area or a living room, and pairs well with warm woods and darker interiors.
