Description
Van Gogh’s The Reaper, after Millet, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this is Van Gogh’s coloured ‘translation’ of a figure by Jean-François Millet, the artist he revered above all others. A reaper swings his sickle through the standing wheat, bent to the endless rhythm of the harvest. Van Gogh reimagined Millet’s figure entirely in his own warm yellows and blues, an image of humanity, labour and the eternal cycle of the land.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the reaper and warm colour keep the character of the original.
