Description
Van Gogh’s The Zouave, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, The Zouave portrays a young soldier of the French Zouave regiment in his exotic uniform, a red cap, a blue jacket braided with gold, and wide red trousers. Van Gogh set the clashing colours boldly against a plain ground, delighting in the challenge of such intense, unusual hues. He was proud of the vivid, almost savage colour he achieved.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the bold reds, blues and gold keep the punch of the original.
Where a bold portrait belongs
Striking and colourful, it makes a statement in a living room, a study or a hallway, and works best against plain, warm walls.
