Description

A white plaster cast of a woman’s torso stands alone on a round grey pedestal, its head, arms and legs below the thigh all missing, cut off cleanly the way a study cast is moulded. The surviving form, shoulders, chest and hips turning slightly to one side, is built almost entirely from broad, confident strokes of white, cream and pale grey, with darker grey used sparingly to mark the folds and shadows where the plaster’s surface changes direction. Behind it, the background is a flat, deep blue-grey wall broken only by a strong diagonal shadow the torso casts to its left, itself painted in near-black blue.

Van Gogh painted this study, along with several other views of the same plaster cast, while enrolled at an academy where drawing and painting from classical casts was a required exercise, a discipline he found frustrating but worked through methodically anyway. Rather than treating the cast as a dry technical exercise, he pushed the paint on thickly, letting individual brushstrokes remain visible across the plaster’s curves, so that even a lifeless copy of an antique statue takes on the same restless, physical handling he gave to living subjects.

What makes this canvas unusual in his body of work is its almost total absence of colour: no flowers, no wheat fields, no southern light, only white plaster against blue shadow, a rare exercise in tonal painting from an artist otherwise defined by saturated colour. That restraint reveals how deliberately he built form through brushwork alone when colour was not available to do the work for him.

The stark white figure against deep blue gives the painting real graphic strength on a wall, closer in feel to a piece of sculpture photography than to a typical Van Gogh, and its restrained palette makes it an unexpectedly versatile companion to brighter canvases nearby.

The craft

The oil edition of this Van Gogh artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.
