Description

Several tree trunks rise vertically through the canvas, their bark rendered in cool strokes of grey-blue and lilac, while the ground between and around them is a dense, all-over weave of green, white and blue dabs standing in for ivy and undergrowth so thick that almost no bare soil shows through. A single darker trunk or root snakes diagonally across the lower half of the picture in a long S-curve, its curling shape the one strong graphic line cutting through the otherwise even texture of small brushstrokes.

At the very top of the canvas, a narrow strip of paler ground opens up in the distance, dotted with small white and cream marks that read as scattered wildflowers catching more direct light, the only real relief from the dense green that fills the rest of the composition. Van Gogh painted this scene in the grounds near where he was staying in the last years of his life, drawn repeatedly to the tangled undergrowth and tree trunks of the surrounding park as a subject that let him work at extremely close range, filling the entire canvas with texture rather than organising it around a horizon or a single object.

What makes the picture unusual is its refusal of any clear focal point: there is no sky, no building, no single tree meant to draw the eye, only an almost claustrophobic density of marks that forces the viewer to read the canvas the way one reads a patch of real undergrowth, by scanning rather than settling. The curling root is the closest thing to a subject, and even that dissolves back into the pattern within a few strokes.

That all-over density gives the painting unusual energy for a woodland scene, closer in feel to a woven textile than a conventional landscape, and it holds a wall well precisely because its pattern keeps working at any viewing distance, dense and abstract up close, recognisably a forest floor from across a room.

The craft

The oil edition of this Van Gogh artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.
