Description

The same type of headless, armless plaster torso appears here in a gentler key than its companion study: the figure stands on a round pedestal against a soft teal-grey wall, lit more evenly so that the shadows across the plaster’s chest and hips are shallow and diffuse rather than sharply cut. The paint is applied in long, smooth strokes that follow the curve of the plaster closely, white warmed here and there with pale yellow and touched with soft green at the edges where the wall’s colour bleeds faintly into the figure’s outline.

Where a bright light source might make plaster look harshly white, here the whole torso reads as a soft ivory, closer in temperature to the wall behind it, so figure and background sit in the same narrow tonal range rather than contrasting sharply. Van Gogh painted several versions of this same cast during his academic training, working the identical motif more than once to practise different lighting and handling, and this canvas is the calmer of the group, more concerned with soft transitions of tone than with dramatic shadow.

Its distinction within his run of cast studies lies precisely in that restraint: rather than using the exercise to push contrast and drama, he used it to study how form can be built almost entirely through subtle value shifts, a discipline distinct from the bold colour contrasts that define his mature painting. The visible brush marks, still loose and directional despite the muted subject, show the same hand that would later paint sunflowers and cypresses, only turned toward a far quieter problem.

On a wall, the soft ivory and teal palette reads as understated and calm, a picture that recedes rather than demands attention, useful precisely because it will not compete with more saturated works nearby while still carrying the unmistakable texture of his brushwork up close.

The craft

The oil edition of this Van Gogh artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.
